Jim was born on June 26, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of James and Mary Mitchell Ditty.

After a wonderful childhood in Chicago Jim was awarded a football scholarship at Wofford College in South Carolina. While there he met the love of his life Ruth Boyd and they were married during his senior year.  After college Jim and his wife moved to California and in 1955 he was drafted into the United States Army. On leaving the military he attended Brigham Young University where he earned a teaching degree. He soon began a life of educating young people. He began his career in Idaho and Utah and then moved to Southern California to take a job as a Probation Officer. But his love of teaching brought him back to the field of education and he took a job as a history teacher and football coach at Norwalk High School. By this time Jim and Ruth had 3 daughters and 2 sons. Jim had a great desire to raise his family out of the city. At this time the family moved to Weimar and Jim was employed by Placer High School. He started out as the Special Education teacher and was an assistant football coach. He then taught history, and then worked many years as the Work Experience Coordinator for Placer until his retirement.

Jim was active in serving in many callings in his church, including teacher, missionary, And member of the Bishopric.

Jim was very patriotic and loved his country and took many trips to visit various sites and places.
