Al passed away on June 10, 2017 surrounded by his wife of 57 years Beth, daughter Heather and son Scott (Wendy).  Al is also survived by grandchildren Connor and MacKenzie Campbell, brother Don (Marilyn) Campbell, and numerous nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents and sister Janice Miller. A native of Drayton Plains, MI, Al was 84 years of age.  In support of the war effort, during WWII Al’s family moved to Long Island, NY, where he and his friends would spend summer days at Coney Island or riding the subway around New York City. His family returned to Michigan at the conclusion of WWII where Al’s love of cars and mechanical things flourished. Finishing high school in 1950, Al enrolled in college at General Motors Institute, graduating in 1954.  With his college degree in hand and his job with Oldsmobile Division waiting for him, in 1956 Al began a two-year active duty assignment as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army assigned to Killeen Base, TX - a small special weapons base near the larger Ft. Hood. While assigned to Killeen Base, Al had the good fortune to meet Beth - the love of his life. The were married on June 23, 1959.  Honorably discharged from the Army, they returned to Michigan where Beth completed college at Michigan State University and Al worked for Oldsmobile Division. In 1964 they welcomed Heather and in 1966 Scott arrived. In 1969 Al was transferred to Sacramento as the District Service Manager - a position he held until his retirement in 1987.  Al fell in love with Northern California and especially the mountains, lakes, and streams in and around the Sacramento Valley and Sierra Nevada mountain range. From the early 1970s through the 1990s, summer vacations nearly exclusively involved camping at one of several state parks in Northern California, including his favorite - Plumas Eureka State Park in Graeagle, CA where many special family memories were made. In addition to trout fishing, Al loved fishing for bass, salmon, steelhead and stripers and was able to fish on or in the many lakes, rivers and streams in Northern California. Another of Al’s passions was golf which he was fortunate to enjoy with Beth, both on the local courses and on t.v. Later, as empty nesters, Al and Beth combined their enjoyment of golf and trout fishing with their love of Graeagle by spending quality time on the links and waters in and around Plumas County.  With twin grandchildren arriving in 1996, Al embraced his new role as “Papa” and spent hours chasing them around the house, having water fights in the back yard, or visiting them in Albuquerque and Washington, D.C. “Papa” was thrilled when they were able to return to Sacramento in 2005. He counted himself exceptionally fortunate to watch them grow up, play sports, graduate from high school, and head off to college. Al loved dogs nearly as much as he loved his grandchildren. Family pet Daisy along with granddogs Mariah, Murphy, and most recently Guinness held special places in his heart.  Al and Beth were long time members at Fair Oaks Presbyterian Church and enjoyed close friendships with members of their beloved Liberty Ship Mariners group. Most recently, Al and Beth called Sunrise Community Church their home yet maintained strong ties with their many friends from the Liberty Ship. It was these relationships and church ties that served as a cornerstone for Al’s following of and commitment to Jesus Christ.  He would say it was a continuous journey and one in which he is now reaping the rewards promised of the Christian faith.  Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 1:00PM at Sunrise Community Church (8321 Greenback Ln, Fair Oaks, CA).  PRICE FUNERAL CHAPEL (725-2109, www.pricefuneralchapel.com), directors.
