Irene was a beloved wife, mother and grandma, she is going to be missed so much. She loved to polka, play cards, pinochle being her favorite, she baked the most wonderful cookies and crocheted the most beautiful afghans. Watching Irene and Vic glide around a dance floor was a sight to behold, they attended Polka “Woodstock’s.” Dancing was probably how they stayed so fit with Irene’s amazing cooking skills. With such a large family on the farm she learned to cook very young and got better and better. Many times, after dancing the night away Irene, Vic and friends or family would play a few hands of cards to wind down. Many times, it was teams, women against men, if the men won, she was sure they had cheated. During the holiday season from the west coast all the way to the east coast people impatiently awaited the arrival of the mail carrier with their cookies. There is one incident of someone accusing the mailman of stealing their cookies because he was so looking forward to biting into one of them, another young man used them as a bartering chip while he was stationed in Afghanistan. There was no one who had tasted her cookies that didn’t look forward to the next batch. From the time her grandchildren could stand on a chair she had a little apron tied around their waist baking cookies together, they loved to play Old Maid and Yahtzee together, she made them feel important. She was so loved by her grandchildren and they loved spending time with her. In between all the things she did with her family and friends she managed to retire from PERS with 36 years under her belt. Irene was nothing if not a hard worker. With her passing so many things will never be the same, but, we all will have so many wonderful memories and traditions she started that will continue to bring smiles to our faces and warmth in our hearts.
