Ann Louise Thompson Obituary

Ann Louise Macumber Thompson died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 90 on July 13, 2025, in Lakebay, Washington.

Ann was born on March 17, 1935 to Robert and Vivian Macumber in Winterset, Iowa. She was raised in Lorimor, Iowa where she actively participated in all aspects of farming and raising livestock. She played on the high school basketball team and continued to play after graduation at Tarkio College. She transferred from Tarkio to Brigham Young University her junior year where she graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education.

During a square-dancing class at BYU, Ann met a handsome young man named David Thompson. They were married on January 25, 1958 in the LDS Los Angeles Temple. They eventually settled in Citrus Heights, CA where David worked as a high school teacher.  Ann was a homemaker and very actively involved in raising their children: Raymond, Reed (who died at 18 months old), Susan, Justin and Brenda.

After the children left home, Ann returned to school and earned a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy from Sacramento State University. She worked briefly as a therapist at LDS Family Services.

Ann was known for her exceptional skills in the kitchen and at the sewing machine. She made many quilts that are still treasured by the recipients. She regularly baked and distributed chocolate chip oatmeal cookies to those who she felt needed a little treat. She spent many hours loving and serving others without complaint or passing any judgement. She was known for her sense of humor, ability to see the good and laugh during challenging situations. She loved doing stitchery and several friends and loved ones received a framed sampler of her favorite quote, “Live by Faith, Not Fear.”  She expressed gratitude on a daily basis and most of all, loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with all her heart.

Ann was a woman of faith and had a strong love for her Savior, Jesus Christ. She regularly attended her ward in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She held several church callings and served faithfully for years and years. She and David completed a 2-year service mission at Deseret Industries.

Ann is survived by her children: Raymond (Kayla) Thompson, Susan (Ron) Hardy, Justin (Rebecca) Thompson and Brenda (Martin) Engeler, 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, her husband David and her toddler son Reed.
