Coleene Shurtz Jurgens

On the morning of June 27, 2024 our sweet Coleene Shurtz Jurgens passed away in Sacramento,
California. At the age of 98, Coleene lived a long life filled with love and happiness, and as she
peacefully passed, she was surrounded by family.

Born on August 27, 1925 to parents Frelen Shurtz and Stella Spencer Shurtz in Cedar City, Utah,
Coleene was the only girl of nine children. Her father was a farmer and mother a homemaker,
and she spent her childhood in Delta, Utah, later graduating from Delta High School.

In her early twenties, Coleene moved to Salt Lake City and shortly moved to West Virginia after
that where she became a mother to her first son Eugene. Later, she moved back to Salt Lake City
and had her two daughters Judy Ann and Linda Joan in Utah. In 1955, Coleene married Charles
Jurgens and selflessly raised two more sons Kurt and Jim as her own. That same year in 1955,
she and her family moved to California.

Through her five children, Coleene had seventeen grandchildren and an uncountable number of
great-grandchildren, along with a few great-great grandchildren on the way. She loved her family
more than anything, and along with being a homemaker she worked many jobs to help contribute
to her family financially in a time where women were discouraged from the workplace. Coleene
held jobs in grocery stores, retail stores like Sears, and many creative side jobs.

Coleene was an artist and incredibly creative person. She was an amazing painter displaying her
paintings in art shows and selling many of her works. As a seamstress, she made doll clothing,
along with clothing for her children, her daughter Joan’s wedding dress, along with other bride’s
wedding dresses in the community.

As an artist, she crafted many ceramics like her famous Christmas village sets which she gave to
every bit of family and friends. She made wedding cakes and catered weddings. Coleene created
quilts, designed diamond jewelry, and made teddy bears giving one to each of her grandchildren.
During the holidays, she would make candy and pass it out to everyone. She also made
greenhouses and helped to build a cabin in Fort Bragg, CA with her husband.

Coleene was dedicated to her faith and was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints. She loved the beach and loved to travel. She was silly and sweet and loved
playing games. Whenever she visited her family in California, she always insisted on playing
cards and loved it when she won. She loved collecting jewelry, watching and competing in game
shows and eating Mexican food. Her family loved her very much and she will be greatly missed.

Coleene’s funeral will be held on Wednesday July 10, 2024 at Price Funeral Chapel in Citrus
Heights. There will be a viewing held at 9am, funeral at 10am, and a graveside service to follow.
