Diane Cohen passed away at home on December 31, 2023, due to complications of Parkinsons’s Disease. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mel Catholic Church, 4745 Pennsylvania Ave, Fair Oaks, CA on Friday January 12: Rosary at 10:00AM, Mass at 10:30, with a reception to follow in the Parish Center. Burial will take place on January 12 at 1:30PM at Fair Oaks Cemetery, 7780 Olive St, Fair Oaks, CA 95628.
Diane was born in 1951 to Raymond and Alice Abeln near St Louis MO. Ray Abeln passed way in 1953. Alice remarried in 1959 and they moved to a farm in western Minnesota.
Diane went to high school at St. Benedict’s in St. Joseph MN. She graduated from the College of St. Catherine in St Paul MN with a degree in Nursing, and went on to work as an RN at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, and later at Community Hospital of Sacramento.
Diane had many interests including the outdoors, music, reading, and above all, the Catholic Church and her family. She toured Europe in college with the St. Catherine Chamber Singers. In her 20s, she was an avid bicyclist participating on several long-distance tours including riding coast to coast across the US. She also loved to camp and backpack. After marrying Ted Cohen in Sacramento CA, Ted and Diane continued their outdoor adventures including bicycle touring in New Zealand with one year old Seth. After a few years, Diane slowed down her outdoor adventures as she focused on her growing family: Rebecca born in 1985, and Nathan in 1987.
Diane is survived by her husband of 44 years, Ted Cohen; daughter Rebecca Waranowitz (George); son Seth (Ariana Hammett Cohen); son Nathan (Susan Nawbary); grandchildren: Arlo Cohen; Dario Cohen; Clare Waranowitz, Isaac Waranowitz, Brigid Waranowitz, Agnes Waranowitz; sister Mary Herbertz (John); brother David Schumacher (Patti); brother-in-law Ronald Cohen; and 10 nieces and nephews.
Diane was predeceased by her mother, Alice Schumacher; father, Raymond Abeln; adopted father, Ves Schumacher; and niece, Regina Herbertz. Diane loved the Catholic Church and was an active parishioner and choir member at St. Mel Catholic Church for more than 40 years. In lieu of flowers, if you would like to make a donation in Diane’s name, please consider St. Mel Catholic Church; Sacramento Life Center; or PANC (Parkinsons Association of Northern California).
