BORN: MARCH 31, 1933
ENTERED ETERNAL REST: AUGUST 7, 2021
Our Joycey, as our dad used to call her, was born in Richfield, Idaho. As a young child, her parents, Donna and Merton Lyon, along with her older brother, Dale, moved to California. She grew up and graduated from Ceres High School in 1951. At the age of 22, she met her future husband and the man who adored her, Robert Martin. They met working for Borden’s Milk Company where Bob, smitten with this red head, would leave a poem and a stick of gum every day on her desk. They married January 23, 1955 and had three children, Machelle, Maleah and Mark. Along with their three children, she had 2 step children whom she loved dearly, Cherie and Tom.
They left Ceres for Paradise (1963), CA to raise their children. After 10 years in Paradise, they immigrated to beautiful Nanaimo, Canada. But after only 3 years, they decided to relocate to Sacramento where Joyce’s first grandchild was born. There she and Bob enjoyed buying and selling at antique shows around the country. They spent many years traveling, selling, buying, meeting new friends and enjoying their children. Joyce was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She spent countless hours babysitting her babies and keeping the family connected. To her, family and her Catholic devotion was everything. She would volunteer many hours helping at St. Paul’s Catholic Church for rummage sales, funerals, washing windows, whatever was needed. She was a peacemaker who believed that family must always love and support each other, ALWAYS. This value has been deeply instilled in all of her children and grandchildren (of which there are many). She kept in touch weekly with her brother, Dale. She and her best friend, Donna Melvin shared a life-long friendship. They met at age 3 walking their doll buggies down the streets of Ceres. They talked every week, and they both passed in 2021 at age 88, an 85-year friendship.
Joyce was the ultimate fashionista. Just ask her many friends. They loved watching her dress in her many outfits and totally matching accessories. They would love to shop for bling! Even her steering wheel and license plate were “bling.” We firmly believe that she did not wear the same outfit twice. We honored her as “queen” of our family. She did not go a day without dress, makeup, hair and jewelry, which was her passion. “Matchy, matchy” she would always say. She was a wonderful role model with impeccable values and taste. She was a beautiful woman inside and out. It was her essence. She had great friends and each has a story.
Our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt will be sorely missed every, every day and will always remain deeply etched in our hearts. Dear God there is an angel in your midst. We love you mom beyond words! Our beloved mother, may you enjoy your spirit family until we meet again.
