Virginia Sue (Smith) Turley – May 26, 1934 – May 15, 2022
As part of the most beautiful love story, Heaven gained two beautiful angels. Sue Turley passed away surrounded by family and the love of her life. Just 8 days after losing his beloved wife of 68 years, Carl Turley joined her in Heaven. Both of them passed away at their family home in Rancho Cordova, CA.
Carl was the son of Ernest C. and Bertha (Thomson) Turley, and Sue was the daughter of K.P. and Lottie Belle (Johnson) Smith. Both born in Mesa, they grew up a block away from each other in Mesa, Arizona, and were married on June 12, 1953. Carl joined the National Guard as a teenager before earning an education degree from Arizona State University. He then joined the United States Air Force, serving for 23 years before retiring as a lieutenant colonel. Carl was a B-52 radar navigator, flying 200+ missions for the historic Strategic Air Command during the Vietnam War. Following his Air Force retirement, Carl served as manager of the Deseret Industries Thrift Store in Sacramento, CA. Sue was a proud military wife and homemaker and raised four children. Carl and Sue were devout members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They served missions in Johannesburg, South Africa, Phoenix, AZ and Sacramento, CA, and in multiple leadership positions within the church.
Carl and Sue loved to travel with family and friends. They visited Thailand, Israel, Egypt, and South America, among other exotic locations; went on several cruises including to Alaska and Hawaii; and even took their entire family on a cruise to Mexico for their 50th wedding anniversary. Carl and Sue loved their family, enjoyed attending events for their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and hosted many dinners featuring Sue’s famous tacos. Carl and Sue displayed the essence of true love and set the greatest example of dedication and love for each other and family.
