George Dee Barnhart

George (Barney) Barnhart, at 84, gently passed away on August 22, 2026 in Stockton, California. He left behind a legacy of quiet strength, unwavering devotion, and a heart that always put family first.

Born on February 26, 1942, in Everett, Washington, to Lloyd and Eva Barnhart, George grew into a man of steady character and deep loyalty. At eighteen he answered his country’s call, joining the United States Air Force and serving four years with honor—first in Fairbanks, Alaska, and later in Sacramento, California. After earning a degree in computer programming, he dedicated more than twenty-five years to serving the federal government at McClellan Air Force Base. Through his work he provided for his family with quiet pride and reliability, building a foundation of security and care that his loved ones could always depend on.

George was, above all, a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Early in his first marriage, his wife Mary was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. With tenderness and determination, George cared for her while striving to give their family as normal and joyful a life as possible—and he succeeded. After Mary’s passing, he found love again with Kathryn. He poured the same steadfast affection into their life together, cherishing her and their blended family until his final days.

His passions reflected a curious and appreciative spirit. George delighted in history, especially anything related to World War II, and held a soft spot for pre-war automobiles. He found joy in good music—jazz and rock ’n’ roll—and spent more than a decade as a volunteer usher at Sacramento’s Music Circus, happily sharing evenings of live performance with others. In later years he loved settling in to watch classic television shows and films online for hours. Every summer he looked forward to camping in the Sierra Nevada, breathing in the fresh scent of pine and reconnecting with the outdoors he so treasured. One memorable year he even climbed Mount Shasta. Over the decades he owned and meticulously cared for many vehicles, from a Honda CB 500 motorcycle and a humble VW Beetle to a dignified Lincoln Continental—each one a reflection of his careful, attentive nature.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Eva Barnhart, his first wife, Mary Barnhart, and many beloved dogs including his cherished Bella. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn Barnhart; his son, Jason Barnhart; his stepchildren, Tricia Barnett and Christian Larsen; his grandchildren, Joshua Barnhart, Zachary Barnhart, Brielle Lyon, Ethan Barnhart, Samantha Chua, Victoria Hudson, and Colin Barnett; and his great-grandchildren, Liam, Theo, Hayden, Mason, Oliver, and Madeline.

George’s gentle presence, steady care, and warm heart will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to share in his life.
