Henry Joseph Gomes was born in Orange, CA August 15, 1944 to Frank and Evelyn Gomes and was raised in Los Banos, CA, with his sister, Linda, and brother Gene. After graduating from Los Banos High School in 1963, he attended Modesto Jr. College concentrating in auto body repair. He continued learning his craft by attending Fisher Auto Body School in San Leandro.
He joined the Air Force in 1967, married his wife, Sherril, in 1968 and immediately served a year in Vietnam. After returning home, he was stationed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino. Out of military service, Santa Cruz became their home where he was quickly employed by Dick Farrar Buick and later with Steve Bergstrom Motors, and finally with Fanucci Auto Body.
He was never without a project. He could fix and repair almost anything and he loved cars. He had a passion for buying “totals,” fixing them up and selling them. Weekends included driving to the mountains to build a family cabin in Big Trees Village near Arnold, CA.
After retirement and 40 years in Santa Cruz, he and Sherril moved to Orangevale to be near their grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His family meant everything to him and his children, sons-in-law and grandchildren brought him so much joy. He was never late in picking up the grandchildren after school and he was always interested in their activities and enjoyed being a spectator in all their sports. Life after school included working on building a Model T and retelling his stories of the “crazy” things he and his friends would do in their younger years. His smile and gentle, non-judgemental nature are qualities that will always be remembered.
