Janet Nielsen Hansen, 100, of Fair Oaks, California, and a native of Spanish Fork, Utah, passed away May 4, 2022. Janet was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She was a pillar of strength, dignity, and devotion as the matriarch of her family.
Janet was born on December 6, 1921, in Spanish Fork, Utah to loving parents Harvey Alexander Nielsen and Blanche Holt. Growing up in a caring home, she was the second child of five daughters and one son. She was blessed with tremendous musical ability as a talented pianist and organist, having been taught by her mother.
She was a faithful and stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving devotedly in various callings of the church. She shared her gift of playing the organ for the various congregations she attended, playing well into her eighties. She also served for many years as an ordinance worker in the Oakland California Temple with her husband Blair. She had an enduring faith in Jesus Christ and shared that with her family, exemplifying it throughout her life. She never hesitated to provide kind counsel and encouragement, ending with a warm and comforting hug.
Janet met her future husband, Blair Hansen, in Spanish Fork High School. After high school, he moved to Burbank, California working for Lockheed Aircraft Manufacturing, while she attended BYU. Keeping their friendship alive through letters, it then blossomed into a romance. They were married for time and all eternity on September 15, 1942, in the Salt Lake City Utah Temple. Janet and Blair were married for sixty-nine years until his passing in 2012. After their marriage, Blair then joined the United States Navy as an aircraft mechanic, and the young couple then moved to San Diego, California, where he was stationed for the duration of his service and began their life and family together welcoming their first daughter, Danielle. Moving back to Utah after Blair’s time in the service, Janet then welcomed five additional children to the family: Robert, Patricia, Anita, James, and Ronald. In 1961, Janet and Blair decided to leave Utah and relocate to Fair Oaks, California. Janet worked for Aerojet-Rocketdyne for several years in various clerical positions. She also taught piano lessons in the Fair Oaks area for many years.
Janet loved to travel. Her and Blair spent many years after his retirement traveling across the United States and Canada. They often took family members with them especially their grandchildren on many of their trips. They especially loved traveling to historical sites from the history of the Old West, California, and Utah.
Janet was a loving and devoted mother to her six children. She instilled in her children a strong work ethic and a passion for the arts, while also filling the home with a spirit of warmth, love, and kindness. She was cherished by her six children, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. She leaves a legacy of enduring faith, hope, love, and charity. She will be forever missed.
