Joan Lynn (Singleton) Power Obituary

Joan was born in Alhambra, California to Dale and Bernice Singleton. She grew up in Whittier and attended Whittier College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in history in 1965. While at college, she met the love of her life, Donald Power, whom she married on August 5, 1966. Joan was an educator at heart. She taught elementary school for several years in the 1960’s. When her husband became an Air Force officer, she was not able to maintain her classroom, so focused her attention on teaching children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School classes, and helping soldiers study for and pass their GEDs. She returned to elementary education in the late 1980’s, and ended her teaching career teaching various math classes at Merced Junior College. Joan was exceedingly generous with her time and resources. She and Don were actively involved in the local church in each community in which they lived. Joan could regularly be found teaching the kids or preparing food for church gatherings. She financially supported numerous ministries and missionaries, most notably Tom and Sheryl Black’s work in Sofia, Bulgaria. Joan gave liberally, and rejoiced in the ability to help others. Joan recognized that she had been greatly blessed; she needed to bless others with that bounty. She was an active crocheter, and produced baby blankets at an alarming rate. She gave these handmade blankets to the new babies at each of the churches she attended, and to the new babies born to staff in her husband’s offices, and to her grandchildren, and in her retirement, to as many foster kids from the Agape Villages Foster Family Agency as she could possibly manage. If there was a baby around, Joan had a blanket for them. She gave her last completed blanket to a pregnant nurse who had cared for her at Sutter Hospital. Joan lived in many locations throughout the US and West Germany, including La Habra, CA, Grissom AFB (Indiana), Offut AFB, (Papillion, NE), Vandenberg AFB (Lompoc, CA), Warren AFB (Cheyenne, WY), Spangdahlem AFB (Spangdahlem, Germany), Minot AFB (Minot, ND), and Castle AFB (Atwater, CA). Joan and Don moved to Sacramento to be closer to family in 2020. Joan loved napping during football and baseball games. Her favorite teams to nap to were the Fresno State Bulldogs, the Rams, and the Dodgers. She and Don also had an impressive collection of both Star Trek episodes and opera performances on VHS. Joan passed peacefully in her sleep on December 30. She is survived by Don, her three sons Richard, Timothy, and Andrew, their wives, and eight grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her sister Jean Fisher and two granddaughters, Abigail and Evelyn. The family will hold a small, private funeral for Joan on January 13. Upon Don’s passing, the family will organize a combined public memorial for both Joan and Don. Joan will be greatly missed. Her wisdom and generosity have blessed many, and we pray that those blessed by her will, in turn, bless those around them as well. In that vein, in lieu of flowers, please bless the children at Agape Villages Foster Family Agency with your kind donation.
