Jolane Mae Free

Jolane Mae Free, 87, of Elverta, CA passed away on July 19, 2023

Jolane was born on September 21, 1935 to Dorthy Mae and Lawrence Marvin Reynolds of Los Angeles, CA. Jolane graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1953 and worked for the Bell System for the next 30 years.

In 1968, Jolane met and married William Free. Even though they were only married five years prior to his passing in 1974, she always referred to him as the “love of her life”.

Jolane moved north and began working for the San Juan Unified School District as a classroom aid for children with special needs. She also volunteered with Animal Rescue and Adoption Services in Sacramento Region. She fostered many dogs and cats over the years. Friends all knew what a big heart she had and her love for abandoned pets. She could always be counted on to take “just one more” rescued animal. Her most recent adoptions were a cat named Salem and a dog named Peetie. Happily, both of the animals have been re-homed by loving families.

Jolane fully retired in 2010 and volunteered in the CSUS University Arboretum. She learned skills as an arborist and gardener and lovingly cared for a collection of over 1500 species of trees and shrubs.

Jolane had a love of classical music and opera. She was known to the Light Opera Theatre of Sacramento as their Fairy Godmother.

Jolane was predeceased by her mother and father, her spouse, and her brothers Victor and Gary. She is survived by Sister Margaret Ann DeFevere of Visalia

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, September 12 at 10 AM at Price Funeral Chapel, 6335 Sunrise Blvd., Citrus Heights, CA 95610. (916)725-2109. In lieu of flowers, Jolane requests donations be made to any rescue organization.
