LaVerne and his parents relocated to Grass Valley, California when he was six years old. He attended school in Grass Valley, graduating from Nevada Union High School. Afta graduation, Laverne joined the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He was very proud to serve his country.

Vern was a true gentleman, with many friends and family, he loved to hunt and camp in his earlier years, loved to travel and spend time outdoors. He shared stories of his Army days, camping trips to Bodega Bay, and family trips to Fort Bragg. He was an avid storyteller, enjoyed sewing, reading, watching Jeopardy, and of course mealtime was a favorite activity. Above all he was dedicated to his family and taught them to be respectful, honest, and to love the Lord. He guided them by being a respectful Christian example, a devoted husband and father.
