Lorraine Anne Thompson was born in the town of Mott North Dakota on October 17, 1928. Her parents, John and Pauline Barth, were farmers, growing wheat and hay, with cattle, dairy cows, pigs, sheep, chickens and horses. Her grandparents, Peter Steckler and Philippina Heil, and Franz Barth and Mariana Himmelspach were German emigrants from Ukraine. They arrived in Mott by covered wagon. Lorraine was the oldest of 9 children, with responsibility to help with chores, cooking, children, and garden. They moved to different parts of the state during the dust bowl of the 1930’s, but then permanently moved to the farm her grandparents had built outside Richardson North Dakota.
Graduating from high school as the Valedictorian of her class, she moved with her sister Bernice to Denver Colorado. Working as a secretary she meet her husband, William Robert Thompson, a student at the University of Denver. They married on September 1,1949, in Richardton ND. Living in Denver, William graduated with a Masters degree in Science, and their first child, Eileen, was born in September of 1951. Kevin was born in April of 1954. In 1955 they moved to Southern California, with William working as an aerospace engineer. Jeff was born in November of 1960. Later they moved to Sacramento California, to San Jose, and then back to the Sacramento area.
Lorraine was an excellent Craftsperson and Artist, from decorative painting, growing and working with gourds, sewing, knitting - seemed like she could do it all. She had many friends, and was involved with many clubs, gardening, painting and more. She enjoyed keeping in touch with her many siblings and their families, sometimes traveling back to the farm for family reunions. Bill and Lorraine went on many trips, to Europe, Alaska, Hawaii, the East Coast, and more. After a full life, she passed away on May 28, 2023 at 94 of late stage Alzheimers.
She is survived by her children, Eileen Montgomery (husband Gregg) and Jeffrey Thompson, her grandson Parke Montgomery, brother Gerald Barth, and sisters in law, Edith Barth, Whitey Barth, and Rosie Barth, and many nieces and nephews. Passing before her was her husband Bill and son Kevin, her parents John and Pauline Barth, Brothers and sisters Bernice Meyer (Fred) Vincent Barth (Rita) Lucille Wendt (Donald) Caroline Pechtl (Edward) Robert Barth Lawrence Barth and John Barth.
