Michael James O’Kane, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on Friday, February 27, 2026. He was born in Sacramento, California and lived in the area all his life. In 1952, while attending Sacramento Senior High School, Michael began work as a Sales Associate with J.C. Penney Company. It was at Sacramento Senior High that he met the love of his life, Mary Ann Neuharth in chemistry class. Michael graduated high school in February 1955 and went on to attend Sacramento City College, graduating in 1957 with an Associate of Arts degree in Merchandising. Michael was promoted to Department Manager at J.C. Penney in 1957, and he completed Basic Training in the U.S. Army Reserves in 1958. Michael and Mary Ann were married on November 22, 1959. During their 57 years of marriage, they raised three children: Michael Jr., Kimberly, and Timothy.
In 1961, at the age of 25, he joined the Sacramento Police Department, the place where he would spend most of his career. During his time with the Police Department, he rose through the ranks from Police Officer to Captain of Police. Michael served in many areas during his law enforcement career including Patrol, Traffic, Investigations, Jail Shift Commander, Communications, Research & Development, Personnel & Training, and Night Watch Commander where he was the highest-ranking police official on duty during the night shift. He retired in 1991 after 30 years of service.
While working for the Police Department, Michael continued his education and in 1972, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from California State University, Sacramento. The family moved to Fair Oaks, California in 1972 and Michael went on to earn a Master of Public Administration from the University of Southern California in 1975. He later graduated from the FBI National Academy in 1989.
Following his retirement, Michael remained active throughout the rest of his life. He was an avid cyclist, a craftsman woodworker, and he enjoyed traveling the world with Mary Ann. In 1995 grandson Mason Michael McLain was born and both Michael and Mary Ann took great joy in spending time with him.
After Mary Ann passed away in 2017, Michael moved to a senior retirement community in Roseville, California where he enjoyed living until his passing.
Michael is survived by his three adult children, two daughters-in-law, one grandson, and one childhood friend.
A memorial visitation will be held on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. at Price Funeral Chapel, 6335 Sunrise Boulevard, Citrus Heights, California, 95610 followed by interment at Fair Oaks Cemetery, 7780 Olive Street, Fair Oaks, California, 95628. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the American River Parkway Foundation, 5700 Arden Way, Carmichael, California, 95608 or the animal welfare organization of your choice.
