Obituary

Roger Markham Carroll tragically died Saturday morning, April 8, 2023, when he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Sutter County in preparation for a Double Century bike event. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, and also the respected financial director and treasurer for the town of Loomis, where he and his wife, Jo Ann, raised their family of four. He was 62. Roger was born on June 6, 1960 in Vallejo, CA to Don and Myrna Carroll. He grew up and attended school in Sacramento, graduating from Mira Loma High School, where he and his wife met in band. They were married on June 26, 1982. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Sacramento State University, with a special minor in Photography, and became a CPA. He later earned an Associate of Arts degree in Risk Management. Roger worked nearly 25 years as Finance Director/Treasurer for the Town of Loomis. He felt it was important to do what you liked or at least do something with people you liked. Logging thousands of miles, he was an avid cyclist and runner and particularly enjoyed competing in duathlons. Recently, he completed the St. George Marathon in Utah with his brother, Philip. He volunteered his time to the Del Oro High School Band for more than 14 years, as well as numerous other organizations. A man of many talents and interests, Roger was an accomplished musician who, along with his wife, participated in several community bands over the years. He was also a HAM radio operator, an accomplished photographer, but perhaps his best-loved skill was that of magician and master ventriloquist. He created more than 100 self-produced puppets that he used for his various performances at elementary schools, libraries, churches, and scouting events. Roger loved entertaining. Family was a priority for Roger. He was incredibly supportive and encouraged his children’s pursuits. He enjoyed being with family, and especially loved spending time with his granddaughter. He is survived by his wife, Jo of Loomis; son, Markham Carroll of Loomis; daughter, Emily (engaged to Martin Chanecka) Carroll of Sacramento; son, Joshua Carroll of Roseville; daughter, Aileen (Ben) Godfrey of Eugene, Oregon, and granddaughter, Eleanor Godfrey. He is also survived by twin brother, Philip (Jan) Carroll of Modesto; brother, Richard (Melony) Carroll of Alabama; brother, David (Leann) of North Carolina; father- and mother-in-law, William and Verna Clark of Citrus Heights; sister-in-law Carol (Barry) Wilhelm of North Highlands, numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat, Rosco. He was preceded in death by sisters, Susan Carroll and Donna Larsen. Friends and family are invited to attend his funeral service at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3354 Margaret Avenue, Loomis. Internment immediately following at Sierra Hills Memorial Park, 5757 Greenback Lane, Sacramento.
