Ruth Ditty Obituary

Ruth Boyd Ditty, aged 92, returned to her Heavenly Father on January 24, 2024. Born in the small community of Hollifield, McDowell County, North Carolina on Jun 16th, 1931, Ruth’s life was spent in service to her family, friends, patients, and students. Her radiant warmth, strength, and wisdom blessed everyone around her.

Following high school, Ruth’s desire to become a nurse led her to South Carolina where she graduated from the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing. During her study and training there, she met the love of her life—a handsome football player named Jim Ditty. Ruth excelled in her profession, working as an operating room nurse at many hospitals before sharing her skills and experience as a teacher of Nursing Careers in the Regional Occupation Program where she worked until her retirement. As her students carry on the high standards of care she taught and exhibited, her devotion to nursing continues to bless others to this day.

Ruth was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Her love of the Savior inspired her to serve diligently in many callings and capacities. Her legacy is one of faith, discipleship, and Christlike love.

Amidst all her hard work, Ruth enjoyed a life of adventure with her husband. With their five kids in tow, they traveled across the country, went camping, and spent many happy hours sailing. She loved to read and always had a book close by. She had a beautiful voice and her family loved to hear her sing and play the piano. Ruth had a gift for making things bloom and always had a beautiful garden where she spent many happy hours. Her greatest delight, however, was spending time in the company of her family and watching it grow with each generation.

Her legacy is carried on by her loving daughters, Lynn Lee (David), Donna Knudsen (James), Roxanne Dondelinger (Scott), her sons James Ditty (Jill), Scott Ditty (Kim), 18 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren, as well as her sisters Doris Phillips and Ann Harrell, and her brother Ralph Boyd.

Ruth was reunited in eternity with her beloved husband, James Ditty, her parents Carl and Ella Boyd, her sister Helen McKinney, and her brothers Glen, Robert, and Kenneth Boyd.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 13th at 1:00 pm at the Colfax Cemetery in Colfax, California.
