BIEBL, Daniel Joseph
Loving son, husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and godfather - passed away from diabetic complications on Saturday evening, March 14, 2009, at home in Fair Oaks, Calif., surrounded by his loving family. Dan was born on March 26, 1943, in Oshkosh, Wisc., to Joseph and Marie Biebl (nee Phillip). As the first born son
of a father renowned for his singing of Irish songs, Dan was named after the popular song ''Danny Boy''. He is survived by his loving wife of over 40 years, Donna, daughter Deanne Lashbrook (Paul), and as grandfather (''Papa'') to Joshua and step-grandchildren Jordan, Matthew, and Corrine. Dan is also survived by his sister Beth Warnke (Bob) of Oshkosh; brothers Phil Biebl and Kevin Grohskopf of Madison, Wisc.; sister Mary Jo Biebl-Yahnke (Ross) of Madison, as well as many nieces and nephews. Diabetic since age 9, Dan beat all the odds. He outlived his doctor's original prognosis by over 35 years. A proud Eagle Scout, strong scholastic student and quiet leader, Dan's younger siblings always looked up to their big brother. In his senior year in high school, Dan was diagnosed with T.B. and was confined to a sanitarium for most of the year. While there, he continued his education by being the first student to use the Bell Telephone Company's communication system to access his classes. When discharged, Dan was able to attend his graduation as honorary Valedictorian. It was the time of astronaut John Glenn's first ride in space so Dan's speech was titled, ''Everything is A-OK''. Graduating from University of Wisconsin with a B.S. in Art, Dan came to California to make a splash in the advertising field. He was employed by J.C. Penney until his retirement and ended his career as J.C. Penney's Western District Advertising Manager. Dan was a talented artist and after retirement he focused his creativity on woodworking, bowling, photography, and gardening. He could fix just about anything, and he relished his role as ''Papa'' to his grandchildren. He was very active in St. Mel's Catholic Church as lector/reader and commentator for over 30 years, with the 4:30 p.m. on Saturday Mass as his favorite. Prior to that, he did the same at St. Luke's Church in Stockton, Calif., for nine years. Also active in the Macintosh computer club, Dan's knowledge and talents on the computer made him and avid teacher to anyone who needed help or lessons. He was active in his neighborhood and community too. As one of the original committee members, 25 years ago he helped start the West Side Neighborhood Watch. His computer knowledge was useful in starting the ''West Side Stories'' newsletter. He continued with the monthly edition right up until his death. Dan was passionate for NASCAR races, boxing, and his beloved San Francisco 49ers - yet he remained a Green Bay Packers fan at heart. He loved returning to Wisconsin each year for family, fish fries, and fixing up things and enjoying the beach at the beloved family cottages in Door County. Despite the many obstacles in his life, Dan remained a man of strong faith. He was kind, gentle, and compassionate, and had enormous love for his family and friends. Friends are welcome for visitation on March 20 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., with Rosary at 7:00 p.m., and on March 21 from 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at PRICE FUNERAL CHAPEL, (6335 Sunrise Blvd., 725-2109), and are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial on March 21 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mel's Catholic Church, 4175 Pennsylvania Ave., Fair Oaks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Diabetes Association or Mercy Hospice in Dan's name.
